Our Beliefs
Calvary is a church anchored in scripture while pursuing the power and presence of the Spirit.
In weekly worship we praise God, confess sin, affirm our faith, celebrate communion, share scripture and Biblical teaching, and offer a time of response and personal prayer ministry at the altar. Our beliefs align with what Christ followers have believed for the last 2000 years. Here are our core beliefs at a glance:
God. There is only one God. He has revealed Himself through Scripture as the Father (creator), Son (redeemer), and Holy Spirit (sustainer). Deut. 6:4; Ps. 90:2; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14.
Father (Abba). The Father is the creator of heaven, earth, and the human family. Through His unyielding love, He offered His son for our redemption and rescued humanity from sin. Gen. 1:1; Gen. 1:26-27; Gen. 3:22; John 3:16.
Jesus. The Son of God was born of a virgin and lived a sinless life. He is the Savior who redeemed humanity through his death and burial, and conquered sin and death through His resurrection. Jesus sits at the right hand of God and will return again to earth to reign as King. Matt. 1:22-23; Is. 9:6; John 1:1-5; Heb. 4:14-15; 1 Cor. 15:3-4; Rom. 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; Col. 2:9-10; 1 Tim. 6:14-15.
Holy Spirit. The Spirit – our teacher and helper – reveals Christ and empowers the believer for holy living and to boldly share the Good News. The filling/empowering of the Holy Spirit is a repeatable event that all believers can and should pursue. Acts 1:8; John 14:16-18; John 14:26; John 16:7-13; Gal. 5:25; 1 Cor. 2:12; 1 Cor. 3:16; Eph. 1:13; Eph. 5:18; 2 Cor. 13:14; 1 Pet. 1:2.
The Bible. The Scriptures are divinely inspired and the inerrant Word of God. They are revelation from God to man and the infallible rule of faith and conduct. The Bible reveals God’s character, His purpose and plan for His people, and gives us doctrine to live that out. Psalm 119:105 & 160; Prov. 30:5; Isaiah 55:11; 2 Tim. 1:13 & 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:20-21.
Salvation. Salvation is a free gift and is received by grace through faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Anyone can be saved by surrendering to Jesus as Savior and Lord. Romans 6:23; Romans 10:9; Titus 2:11; Luke 24:46-47; Titus 3:5-7.
Prayer. Every believer is called to pray for the Father’s will to be done on earth. Prayer changes our hearts and links our lives with the omnipotent God. James 5:16; Matt. 18:20; Matt. 6:9-13; 1 Thess. 5:17.
Spiritual gifts. The Holy Spirit is manifested through a variety of spiritual gifts to build and sanctify the church, demonstrate the validity of the resurrection, and to confirm the power of the Good News. These gifts should always manifest and function in harmony with the Scriptures to build up Christ’s church. Eph. 4:1-16; Rom. 12:3-8; 1 Cor. 12; 1 Pet. 4:10-11.
The Church. The church is Christ’s body and God’s instrument to reveal His purposes on earth. We believe the church – the gathered people of God – is God’s vessel to reveal His beauty and to distribute His glory on earth. The church is a committed community of believers who represent His unity, His unique and diverse beauty, His love and humble service, and His manifest power and presence in the gathering of worshippers. Psalm 122:1; Acts 2:42-26; Eph. 1:22-23; 1 Pet. 2:4-5; Eph. 3:14-19; Eph. 5:25-30; Heb. 10:24-25.
Eternity. People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally dwelling with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be separated from God forever is ultimate suffering; to be in union with Him forever is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places and a relationship with Jesus is of utmost importance in your peace now and forever. Matt. 1:8; John 2:25; John 3:16 & 5:11-13; Rom. 6:23; Rev. 20:16.
